Help Your Child With Going To Child Care

Blog

When you are planning on putting your child in day care there are some things to do to make those first days go well, so you can focus on the positive aspects of your little one going to day care. Some of the positives include everything from gaining independence to learning how to play well with others and much more. Here are some of the things that you can do to get those positive results in the beginning.

Let your child bring a piece of home

Your child is going to be in a new environment around new people and surrounded by many things they are unfamiliar with. This is why allowing them to bring a piece of home with them can bring them some comfort in those first few days at day care. Some examples of things they can bring with them include things such as their favorite small toy, a picture of the family, or anything else they have a connection with from their home.

Do the same thing at every drop off

While the first day won't include any familiarities, you can establish them by doing the same thing on the second day on that you did at the first drop off day. For example, if you blow your child kisses before leaving on the very first day, then doing it on the days that follow can provide your child with some added consistency that will make them feel more comfortable each time that you drop them off.

Start out with shorter times at the child care

If your child has never spent more than a few hours, or even less, away from you then you may find that things go easier on the two of you by taking them for half days the first three days or so. This allows them to slowly get used to being away from you and allows them to get comfortable with the child care facility before they spend longer days there.

If you see that your child is still struggling with going to child care, then you may want to continue with the half-days until you see that they are doing better with spending time at child care. Another angle you can try along these lines is to take your child to the child care center only a few days out of the week for the first week or more until you see they are adjusting, then add another day, followed by a full week.
